Help! How do I work this Crazy thing?

(pun intended :)

Here's a condensed version of the help files to get you started. For the purposes of this page, anything in Boldface is what you type in on Crazylands, followed by return. We will also give examples as though you have logged in under the name, 'John'. You can substitute your login name for 'John'. There are more complete help files on Crazylands by typing help (topic) of course substituting (topic) with whatever you want to find out about. You should also read help new to see some of the recently added commands.

This page, read in order, acts as a tutorial, starting with the basics, and moving on from there. It is not meant to be comprehensive, but a quick overview of what will help you get started on Crazylands. Alternatively, you can jump to any of the following sections.

Getting Started

The first thing you'll want to do when you enter Crazylands is to get residency. This serves several purposes. First of all, you will want to create your account so that no one else can use your name without your password. Secondly, it will give you access to more commands and it will save your settings so you don't have to keep entering them.

Getting Residency

To get Residency you will have to ask a Super User. To find out who is a Super User, type lsu and you will be shown a list of users that can help you. If one of the Super Users have offered to help you, speak with that one, otherwise, pick one and ask them for residency. To talk to one user privately, type:

tell (username) (whatever)
or, for example, to ask someone named Bill for residency:
tell Bill Can I get residency please?

The Super User will ask you some questions and then may grant you residency. Once you recieve notice that (s)he has made you a resident, you will have to enter your email address and your Crazylands password. First enter your email address as follows:

email (address)
so if your email address is me@mysite.com, then type:
email me@mysite.com

then, you will have to set a password. Simply type password and follow the prompts from there.

Your Settings

Now that your character will be saved, you will want to customise it. The first thing you will want to do is to turn your Hitells on by selecting your terminal type. If you don't know what type you are using, try vt100 as a good first try, so you'd type hitells vt100. That command will then hilight anything that is said to you privately. It also enables you to highlight other options (for example, you can highlight the Crazy Channel by typing cc_hi but more on that later).

Now you'll want to customize your environment. You can set things like descriptions and messages and such.

Use the title, prefix, description, and plan commands to edit what people see about you in your x (examine) file (which people see when they type x (name) to find out about people. For example:

title the one and only
prefix Excellent
description I'm tall and good looking ;)
plan to travel the world...

This information will show up when someone examines you (x john) or fingers you (finger john). Also, anytime you say or tell anything, your prefix will show up and anytime someone enters the room or looks at the room, they will see your name with your title.

Everytime you enter or leave the program, others in the same room will see your connect_msg or your disconnect_msg. Also, everytime you enter a room, others in the new room will see your entermsg. You can see what you are set up for by typeing pinfo. To change these form their defaults, just type the command followed by the new message. Type pinfo again to make sure that your new message makes sense.

Basic Communication

Communicating with other users of the program is the whole idea of Crazylands. This can be accomplished with various commands which determine how you communicate and who you communicate with.

Speaking to other users in the same room

Crazylands is divided into rooms. When you first log in, you enter the main hub by default. There are three ways to communicate with others at the hub: saying, emoting and thinking.

To say hello to everyone in the room, type:
say hello
and everyone else in the room sees on their screen (if you are logged in as John):
John says, 'hello'

As a short form, a single quote acts an abreviation for say. For example:
'hello
will result in the same as the previous example. Notice that no close quote was necessary. The single open quote is simply an alias for the say command. From here on, abreviations will be introduced with the command.

Emoting simply places whatever you type, after your name. To smile, type:
emote smiles. or ;smiles.
and everyone else in the room sees:
John smiles.

Thinking places your thoughts in a thought bubble, for example:
think hmmm or ~hmmm
and everyone in the room sees:
John thinks . o O ( hmmm )

Communicating privately with another user

You can communicate in much the same way privately with selected other people. Note that any communication in this way is secure and cannot be intercepted by anyone.

To say something privately to Bill, type:
tell bill Hello or >bill Hello
and Bill will see on his screen:
John tells you, 'Hello'

To emote something privately to Bill, type:
remote bill smiles or <bill smiles
and Bill will see on his screen:
John smiles

And of course, to show your thoughts to Bill:
rthink bill Hmmm or rt bill Hmmm
and Bill will see on his screen:
John thinks . o O ( Hmmm )

Note that it is not always necessary to type the whole name. Try typing just the first few letters and, if those first few letters do not match any other player, your message will go through. Also, you can send private messages to a few people by separating their names with commas. For example:
tell peter,paul,mary Hi guys!
and they will all get the message. For example, Mary will see:
John tells you, Peter and Paul, 'Hi guys!'

Communicating with everyone on the program

You can communicate with everyone on the program by using the Crazy Channel which treats the entire program as one big room. You can use the ch, ce and ct commands in much the same way as speaking to the room.

ch Hello
(John) Hello
ce smiles
(John smiles)
ct Hmmm
(John thinks . o O ( Hmmm ))

And these will show up on everybody's screen. (Unless they have turned off the channel using the cc command).

Fun stuff (Socials)

Socials are a set of actions which can be performed on their own or directed towards another person on the program. CrazyLands has some very unique socials that make spodding more fun. There is even a way to create your own commands! (Check out Crazy Doober on the main page.) To use a social, simply type the name of the social. If you want it to be directed at a person, type the name of the social followed by the person's name. For example:

wave
John waves.
wave paul
John waves at Paul.

and Paul will see:

John waves at you.
